Wind Rising in the Alleys

SATB + piano

A short, fiery fanfare for choir and piano, this piece is based on a 100-year-old poem by Lola Ridge that is so modern, raw, and fresh that it could have been written yesterday. It celebrates a different kind of hope, "not sweet; acrid as blood in the mouth." I think of it as being more about passionate resilience and (perhaps) resistance, or the winds of social change that so often start in the "alleys" with some of the least fortunate in society.

Winner of the 2022 Diane Loomer Award from Choral Canada this piece is published by Cypress Choral Music.
