for mixed choir (SATB) unaccompanied
words by Lola Ridge
Difficulty: Medium
Inspired by this poem's power and directness, I wrote this short piece in a period of 2 days in February 2022. I wanted to capture the poem's sense of simple, transcendent bliss--but I ended up incorporating a sense of restlessness and longing as well, especially in the 2nd half. I think this was a result of how the text struck me at that particular moment in time: after 2 years of a pandemic, and in the first days of a war, the desire to transcend anger and pain, to find a place of sanctuary, is stronger than ever. It was inevitable that the sense of longing for such a place would come out in the music.
As of March 2022, this piece is looking for a premiere.
